Week 3: Discussion#3 (Communication Barrier)

Q1: 

1. What are the communication barriers that the 2 persons experienced?

They both experienced linguistic barriers (from their inability to fully understand each other's language) and Lin's thoughts and emotions are affected by psychological barriers.

2. Why does breakdown of communication occur?

Breakdown of communication occurs because there are a lot factors present in the process of communication. When these factors cause problems, they become barriers and when they do, they then result to misunderstanding of the message and other conflicts. 

3. What is AFAM? What is Jacky Lou? What is Gold Digger?

AFAM means foreigner. Jacky Lou means jackpot(Jacky) and lugi(Lou). A gold digger is someone who only engages in a relationship to acquire and take advantage of the resources of the other person for their personal use.

4. What are the issues of the girl? Enumerate and explain.

The girl's emotion's and feelings towards the man is affected by others' opinions and criticism. Also, she finds it hard to interpret her feelings to the man since she is inexperienced in his language.

5. Can their situation be resolved/improved? If yes, why and how? If no explain why.

It is still possible for them to resolve their issue but first, Lin should first assess her true feelings towards Arthur. She needs to know if she truly loves him or not, without regards to what other people say. If she does, then she needs to accept that others will always judge and criticize them (even though they shouldn't). Also, it would help them if they keep trying to learn each other's language to fully express their thoughts and emotions.

Q2:

Can you recall an experience in your life where you experienced communication breakdown? What happened and why did the breakdown occur? (answer in not less than 5 sentences).

We took a vacation once in Japan. People were disciplined and nice but we experienced linguistic barriers. There was this one time when we went to a store that sells cellphones for an inquiry about my dad's cellular service. We asked on how to enable his data roaming but the clerk can't understand and speak English well. As a result, we never knew how to fix my dad's issue but we still had a great time there.
